The Power of Credit Card Points and Miles

On my recent trip to Roatan, Honduras, I had pizza at Pizzarama. This restaurant is located at Bananarama, a Dive and Beach Resort less than half a mile from the Kimpton Roatan, where I was staying. While the pizza was good, the resort was not somewhere that I would ever want to stay. Once again, the power of credit card points and miles was brought to the forefront of my mind.
Bananarama Cost
Bananarama is probably not somewhere I would pick to stay. However, the diving in Roatan is great, and for a diver, it is an affordable place to sleep at night. Knowing there is a two night minimum, let’s take a look at the pricing:
The Garden King with Queen, with taxes, comes out to $358 for two nights or $175/night. It can sleep five people, but as you can see from the picture, it is very basic.
The Contrast of Using Points at the Kimpton Roatan
According to our shuttle driver, the Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort & Spa is probably the most luxurious hotel on the island of Roatan. We stayed at this 4-star hotel for less than $175/night we would have paid over at the Bananrama because we used credit card points and miles. Resort fees cost us $60/night, but that covered some nice amenities. We also had impeccable service, and the pool and beach area were WAY nicer than Bananarama.
I would venture to guess that this hotel area in front of the Vos Café and Bar was nicer than any area at the Bananarama.
Our room at the Kimpton Roatan had a great ocean view. I think it is far superior to the one at the Banarama, too. 😜
The Choice is Yours
Should you get into the credit card points and miles hobby? Is the time commitment of earning and redeeming the points, plus a little time spent on organization, worth it? The choice is yours – do you want to stay at the Bananarama and pay more? Or is getting a nicer stay for pennies on the dollar your preference? I think you know which I prefer 😉.
The beach near both hotels is gorgeous, but the hotels differ considerably!
Bottom Line
I wrote this tongue-in-cheek post (yes, Alex, mom is using another weird saying) to illustrate the power of credit card points/miles. I may eat pizza at the Bananarama, but I am NOT staying there. You will find me down the beach at the Kimpton Grand Roatan, paying at least half the price. Where will you be staying?
