About Hyatt and Mr. and Mrs. Smith Hotels

Pam

Earlier this year, Hyatt announced the end of its partnership with Small Luxury Hotels of the World as of May 15, 2024 (😢). They also announced their partnership with Mr. and Mrs. Smith Hotels. For those unfamiliar with these brands, let’s talk about Hyatt and Mr. and Mrs. Smith Hotels.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith Hotels

Mr. and Mrs. Smith Hotels is a group of boutique hotels worldwide. More than 700 of these hotels will now participate in the Hyatt brand and can be booked with Hyatt points. When booking with a Mr. and Mrs. Smith Hotel, you will get the following benefits;

  • 5 Base Points per every eligible $1 USD spent on room rates
  • Standard tier Bonus Points on eligible room rates for elite tier members
  • Credit toward earning tier status and Milestone Rewards
  • Free nights at Hyatt hotels and participating Mr. & Mrs. Smith hotels using earned points
  • Room upgrades for Globalists upon check-in (based on availability)
  • Credit toward the Brand Explorer Award – earn a free night for every five unique Hyatt brands experienced, including Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Previously, Mr. & Mrs. Smith hotels were bookable with IHG points, and I stayed at a couple of them in New Zealand.  I checked to see if the ones I previously stayed at could be booked with Hyatt, but they are unavailable. However, a different hotel, the Azur Lodge, is available and looks incredible. I also understand that they will continue to add hotels to the collection, so more will be available for booking in the future.

Booking Mr. and Mrs. Smith Properties with Hyatt Points

Although we always say that booking with Hyatt points for Hyatt hotels is the best deal around, and we get oversized value for them, the same may not be true about these properties. They will use dynamic pricing with Mr. and Mrs. Smith Properties, meaning that the cost will more closely resemble the cash price.

The hotel below, with a cash price of $900, really brings this home. We have booked many Park Hyatts that cost that much or more for no more than 45K Hyatt points. This one will cost 76K —just not the oversized value we are used to seeing.

The cash price for this hotel is about $900.

Our excitement when we heard that Mr. & Mrs. Smith would be part of the Hyatt booking system plummeted when we heard about the difference in booking them.  Each World of Hyatt point will be worth around 1.0-1.5 cents toward the cost of a stay at Mr. & Mrs. Smith properties.

As time progresses, we will see how it all plays out. I imagine we will find some good deals here and there—just not those killer deals we hoped to get with SLH in the past (like the Grand Hotel Victoria in Lake Como).

Bottom Line

The Hyatt and Mr. & Mrs. Smith Hotels partnership initially excited us. The hotels seem promising, but the redemptions with Hyatt points may not be as valuable as redeeming at other Hyatt properties. Let us know what you find as you try to book them!

I was looking for a quick getaway for my hubby and I in the fall and the Mr and Mrs Smith properties popped up in Hyatt. I thought I’ll look just to see. One in Denver looked perfect…273,000pts per night!!!! Its cash rate was $500. Who on earth would ever book that with points?! lol But maybe thats Hyatts point? Less point bookings and they make more money with cash bookings? I have no idea. I just thought that was funny and also really frustrating.

Hyatt properties are generally the best deal. Using Hyatt points for a Mr. and Mrs. Smith property, not so much.
