Meghan sends us her reader success story to San Antonio, a popular Texas destination. Here is her story:

My name is Meghan, and I love getting a good deal, so when I heard more about traveling on points two years ago, I was hooked. My husband, I, and our two young boys recently returned from a Texas road trip from Arizona to San Antonio.  We didn’t utilize miles for airfare, but we did get our five nights free at Hyatt Hotels with our Chase Ultimate Rewards® points and free night certificates.

 

Wild Oak Ranch San Antonio

Our first stop was at the Hyatt Vacation Club at Wild Oak Ranch San Antonio. Since this hotel is a Category 4, we used free night certificates from the World of Hyatt Credit Card.

The resort grounds are beautiful, and everything is very spread out; it is a condo-like resort. We just booked the standard studio room. The room had a king bed and pull-out sofa to fit a family of 4, and it had a mini fridge, microwave, toaster, and kitchen sink.wo

 

 

The hotel has a 800 ft lazy river, the lazy river was not heated but was open during our spring break trip. It was just a bit chilly but still fun. There is also a sandy beach for kids by the lazy river and plenty of chairs. The hotel then had a heated pool with 2 water slides that went into the pool; it was warmer than the lazy river but still a bit chilly for us Arizonans. Regardless, we still had a reasonable amount of time in the pool. The water slides have a height restriction of 48 inches, which is strongly enforced.

 

 

Other Activities

The hotel also has a playground with sand, tether ball, ping pong table, volleyball net, horseshoes, yard games, a large putting green with 8 holes, and a small basketball game that was all free. They had some different paid activities that were going on throughout each day, such as bracelet making at the kids’ club, wine glass etching, etc., but we didn’t do any of those. The activities ranged from about $4-$12.

They also sold s’mores kits to make s’mores by their fire, which were about $8 for two s’mores. A tip that I was told by one of the workers was to buy s’mores stuff at Walmart down the street and bring your own s’mores for a lot cheaper—great idea! When we were there, they had a movie and popcorn for free every night; however, the movie was in the clubhouse, not outside on the lawn.

Overall, there was plenty to do and a fun visit! We thought it was a great use of our free night certificates!

 

Grand Hyatt San Antonio Riverwalk

After our stay here, we went to the Grand Hyatt San Antonio Riverwalk. It was an absolutely beautiful hotel, and my family would never have been able to stay in it without points and miles! The hotel is a Category 3, and we paid 15,000 points a night using points transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards®, plus $45 a day to self-park at the hotel.

The hotel is on the quieter end of the riverwalk but is walkable to The Alamo, the mall, the Go Rio Cruise, and some restaurants. It has an outdoor heated pool, yard games, and a lovely outdoor seating area.

The hotel also has a club, which we were able to use a free club access award. The club was very kid-friendly, with high chairs, which we appreciated. The club had only one hot breakfast item, pastries, cheese, fruit, oatmeal cups, etc. It had a very nice selection of drinks and an excellent coffee machine. In the evening, they had one hot item and then cheese, shrimp, deli meats, cookies, wine, and beer at no additional charge.
