Review of Rio Perdido, an SLH Hotel

Jess

If you want adventure or relaxation (or both!) in Costa Rica, Rio Perdido might be just what you’re looking for. Set within a 1,500-acre private reserve, Rio Perdido offers everything from cliffside yoga to a mile-long thermal river to a canyon adventure. Here’s how we did it on points and miles….

Getting There

We flew from Houston (HOU) to Liberia (LIR) on Southwest® Airlines for just 24,236 Southwest points and $78.90 in taxes and fees/person round-trip. My mom and Molly actually flew for just $78.90 each as Ella and I both had Companion Passes. Rio Perdido is located about one hour and 15 minutes from Liberia airport.

We did not rent a car in Costa Rica and instead booked private transportation though Maleku Tours. This was our third time using Maleku Tours, and Eugenia and her drivers never disappoint! We spent the first three nights of our trip at the Andaz Papagayo, so our driver picked us up from the Andaz and took us to Rio Perdido. We decided to turn the drive into an adventure, and we had Eugenia create a custom tour for us. On our way from the Andaz to Rio Perdido, we stopped at Llanos de Cortez waterfall, then grabbed a bite to eat at a local restaurant. It was a great way to break up the one hour and 40-minute drive between hotels.

The Redemption

It is important to note that Rio Perdido has a minimum guest age of 8, and they are very strict about this. If you will be traveling with children under the age of 8, Rio Perdido will not be a good fit for your family. They also have a two-night minimum stay.

Because Rio Perdido is an SLH property, it’s bookable with Hilton points or Hilton free-night awards. Standard award nights cost 90,000 Hilton points/night. All guest accommodations at Rio Perdido are standalone bungalows. The East Bungalows are the standard rooms, and they sleep three. We inquired about upgrading to the Center Bungalows, which sleep four, and were quoted $140 + 13% tax/night. We declined the cash upgrade, but we were ultimately upgraded to Center Bungalows for free at check-in anyway thanks to my Hilton Diamond status (that I have from holding the American Express Hilton Honors Aspire card).

I found the Center Bungalows to be very dark, but I loved the outdoor showers. The staff also made the sofa up into a second king bed, so there was plenty of room for the three of us (and my mom had her own bungalow next door).

All information about the American Express Hilton Honors Aspire card has been collected independently by Travel Mom Squad. The American Express Hilton Honors Aspire card is no longer available through Travel Mom Squad.

I loved the Center Bungalow’s outdoor showers.

The Hotel

One of the reasons we chose Rio Perdido is because I knew we would not be renting a car, and they have lots of activities and experiences right on the premises. The star of the show is their hot river that runs through the property. They also offer volcanic mud that you can apply, let dry, then rinse off in the river. The mud and access to the thermal river are complimentary for guests and open from 6am to 7:30pm daily.

We spent a lot of time in the thermal river.

The property also boasts three pools. Each one is fed by thermal mineral springs and is a different temperature. We loved this unique feature! The pools are open from 7am to 10pm daily.

There are also several paid activities you can take advantage of at Rio Perdido—cliffside yoga, mindfulness meditation, a birdwatching experience, river tubing, a stargazing experience, mountain biking, and more. Ella and I took advantage of the Canyon Adventure during our stay; this is probably the experience that Rio Perdido is best known for. It costs $76/person and lasts about an hour. We swung from a Tarzan-style swing, zip-lined, and crossed narrow bridges. We had a blast! The guides made us feel completely safe and comfortable. There was also a professional photographer on the adventure with us, and afterwards we were able to purchase photos. (The price will depend on how many people are in your party, but it was $40 for our photos and I thought that was reasonable.)

The Property Guide states that one complimentary guided walk at 8:15am and one complimentary cliffside yoga class at 7:30am are included with your stay. We did not make it to either of these, but it’s nice that they’re included for those who want to take advantage of them!

I was not able to take advantage of the on-site spa, but my mom got a massage while we went on the Canyon Adventure and said it was great!

The Food

Rio Perdido is not near anything else, which is part of the appeal, but also means that you’ll be eating all of your meals on-site. We thought the food was very good. Breakfast is served each morning in the main restaurant from 7am to 10am and comes with views of monkeys swinging in the treetops. We had breakfast included with my Hilton Diamond status, but the Property Guide states that à la carte breakfast is included for everyone as part of their stay, so I am not sure my status really mattered much.

Yummy Costa Rican breakfast.

Lunch is available either at the main restaurant from 12pm to 3pm, or by the pool from Canyon Bar. Canyon Bar is open from 11am to 6pm. We had lunch by the pool and thought it was very good! Molly is a picky eater but was still able to find something she liked at each meal.

Chicken sandwich hit the spot.

Dinner is served in the same restaurant from 6pm to 9pm, and reservations are required. The hotel emailed us about a week before our stay, and we were able to make reservations at that point.

Pasta for the picky eater 🙂

Bottom Line

We loved the two nights we spent at Rio Perdido. It was the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. We truly felt like we were glamping in the jungle, and I would 100% return. Have I convinced you to give Rio Perdido a shot next time you’re in Costa Rica?
