Reader Success Story: Elite Benefits with The Edit at The Chatwal Hotel

Megan K.

Ever since writing about The Chatwal hotel in New York City in a previous blog post, I’ve been wanting to stay at this high-end property with fascinating history and connections to Broadway. The problem: it’s a Category 8 property and costs a lot of Hyatt points. So I thought this aspirational property would always remain out of reach for my points budget. That is, until Chase recently introduced its Points Boost feature in Chase Travel℠.

I needed a one-night stay in New York City to see a Broadway show in mid-August. August is one of the few times of year when cash rates are (relatively) affordable in Manhattan. So, rather than simply booking one of the lower-category Hyatt hotels for this trip, I thought I’d check out Chase Travel℠.

The Chatwal

I was excited to see The Chatwal—just a few blocks from the theater I was going to—available for just over 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards® per night. The cash rate was around $600, but I received 2 cents per point booking this stay through Chase Travel℠, thanks to holding the card_name. While that’s a lot of points for one night, it’s a bargain compared to the 45,000 Hyatt points I’d need to stay the same night at the same hotel.

To make the stay even more rewarding, The Chatwal is part of The Edit by Chase Travel℠. The Edit is a collection of hotels that offer elite-like benefits to guests who book through Chase Travel. The Edit benefits at this hotel include:

  • Daily continental breakfast
  • $125 property credit (this varies by property)
  • Upgrades (based on availability)
  • Early check-in/late check-out (based on availability)
  • Wi-Fi
  • Welcome amenity

Another advantage of booking through The Edit is that, unlike what happens with many third-party booking sites, I actually received World of Hyatt elite-night credit for the stay. I wanted the elite-night credit to check another brand off my list for Hyatt’s Brand Explorer (affectionately known in the points-and-miles community as “Hyatt Bingo”).

Elite Benefits

My husband and I were upgraded as part of our The Edit booking to a deluxe king room, which was much larger than many other Manhattan rooms we’ve stayed in. While our stay included a complimentary continental breakfast, we opted to order a full breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant, The Lambs Club, and use our $125 property credit to cover it. Given the short stay, we didn’t have time to use the credit in any other way. If I return for an extended stay, I plan to use it at the spa.

The Chatwal Experience

I didn’t send Pam’s upgrade template before my stay, because I wasn’t celebrating anything and didn’t have any special requests. To my surprise, The Chatwal’s concierge reached out in advance to find out if we were celebrating anything or had any special requests—such impressive and thoughtful service!

This hotel exceeded my (already high) expectations. The vibe is reminiscent of old New York glamour, but it doesn’t feel dated. The property only has 76 rooms, so it never seemed crowded. In fact, we hardly saw any other guests except at breakfast! The staff was so attentive and helpful. I loved the little touches, such as the welcome gift and note from the manager.

I was a little concerned about noise being on the third floor, but we never heard any noticeable sounds from the street below—an incredible perk in the city that never sleeps! The Chatwal was a fabulous experience overall for our brief stay. While I wouldn’t pay 40,000 or 45,000 Hyatt points for this property, I’d happily book it again through The Edit at a lower price point and with the incredible perks that The Edit offers!

Bottom Line

One of the best things about points and miles is that no trip or property is truly off-limits; you just have to be creative and patient sometimes. Getting to have a Globalist-esque stay at The Chatwal filled with perks because we booked through The Edit was a wonderful experience—and a great use of our points.
