Best Hotels for Out-of-Town Kid’s Sports

Pam

Recently, we went out of town to watch our grandson’s soccer tournament. Luckily, we have credit card points so it made it an easy decision to tag along on Alex’s family trip to Idaho Falls. I can’t even imagine how much people spend when they use cash to go out of town for their children’s soccer, basketball, baseball, and other travel events. At almost $200/night that REALLY adds up. Let’s talk about some of the best hotels for out-of-town kid’s sports!

There is no way that I would pay a lot to stay at a hotel where we would be at a field or school for most of the day. Give me free breakfasts, a pool, and a fridge for snacks, and I would be a happy camper. I also would prefer to use a free annual night certificate or less than 40K in points.

For our trip to Idaho Falls, there were not a lot of choices. We ended up using IHG free annual night certificates to stay at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Holiday Inn. It would have cost $236/night plus taxes and fees.

Other Hotels for Out-of-Town Kid’s Sports Idaho Falls

Candlewood Suites would have been another good choice at 39K/night with a full kitchen and free breakfasts. It is recently renovated and it was a close call about which to stay in.

Springhill Suites by Marriott at only 30K/night is another good choice for an out-of-town event if you have Marriott points. Two queen beds and a sofa bed make it a perfect family place to stay.

The Marriott Residence Inn would have been a great stay at only 34K/night. This was one of my favorite hotels when my kids were little because the breakfasts were always good, and we could use the full kitchen to prepare lunch and save money.

Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Idaho Falls is another hotel that would have been a great family hotel for sports events. At only 22.5K points, it would be a cheap stay. It is hard to believe that it also comes with a free breakfast!

Hampton Inn Idaho Falls would have cost us 35K Hilton points for a room with two queen beds.

Home2 Suites Idaho Falls costs 35K Hilton points. Each of these hotels listed has hot breakfasts and pools, making them a fun family stay.

Tru by Hilton is a brand I’ve never stayed at. It would cost 40 Hilton points. Tru Hotels are geared toward younger travelers with lower-priced room rates and modern tech conveniences.

Other Great Hotels Brands to Look For

Although Hyatt didn’t have a footprint in Idaho Falls, it is one of our favorite places to stay at for when children (or grandchildren) play sports out-of-town. Hyatt Place are easy to find for 5,000 – 12,000 Hyatt points. Hyatt House is also a great, affordable family stay.

Bottom Line

Not only do we use credit card points and miles for wonderful vacations, they take the sting out of having to travel out of town for sports events. What are some of your favorite brands to stay at when you leave town to support your favorite athlete?
