The Thompson Madrid is a luxurious hotel situated in the heart of Madrid, near the Gran Vía and the Puerta del Sol. It was also a quick walk to the Plaza Mayor, the largest square in Madrid. It’s smack in the center of Madrid, in fact, and close to tons of dining, shopping, and nightlife. It was also the very first Thompson Hotel built in Europe. And I happen to love a Thompson Hotel! ❤️ This Thompson Madrid review will tell you exactly why this is my favorite place to stay in Madrid.
This hotel is a Category 6 hotel, and the standard pricing is 25,000 Hyatt points/night. The cash rate is nearly $500 per night. I stayed in a King Bed City View room the first night I was there.
Once Alex and Jess arrived, we moved to the Family Suite. It was a one-bedroom suite and another room (similar to my first room). We paid 25K/night in Hyatt points, used a suite upgrade award, and paid $600 a night for these rooms, and the cash price would have been more than $1,300. My room was connected to theirs through a corridor.
My driver dropped me off near the hotel when I first arrived, as it is located in a pedestrian-only area. The check-in process was relaxing because it was all done from the sofa, after I was offered a beverage. When I arrived at about 3:00 pm to check in to the Thompson Madrid, my room wasn’t ready, so I walked around for an hour. The Thompson is really close to some popular spots, so that was a great way to kill some time.
When my King Bed City View room was ready, I was delighted to see some olive oil waiting for me as a nice gift. A few hours after I arrived, I was also presented with a tray of delicious flaky, layered cookies accompanied by a nice note. I assumed this was because of my Globalist status (although Jess and Alex, who are also Globalists, didn’t receive them the second night when they checked in).
A nice welcome gift at the Thompson Madrid.
The room was quite large, especially by European city standards, and decorated with the usual moody blue touches and modern wood trim that most Thompson hotels seem to feature. Thompson’s signature style blends sleek mid-century modern with local flair, and I love that combination. Another delight in this room was a very small terrace with a view of the city streets.
My first room.
Typical modern, moody vibes of a Thompson.
A small sofa, a lounge chair, and a nice bar completed the décor. The bathroom was sleek and stylish with marble touches. They also have Bowmaker bathroom amenities, which smell so good to me that I have ordered their gel and lotion before to have at home!
By the next night, Alex and Jess had also arrived. We thought the Family Suite we had booked would be two rooms connected by an adjoining door, but it was really just a suite and a separate room that were only connected by a shared corridor. The suite had a nice living area, a bedroom area, and a huge bathroom. Next door, there was a standard room, which, while smaller than the first room I had, was still gorgeously decorated. As a snorer, I just appreciate not having to share a room with a non-snorer.

The bathrooms were gorgeous, but the main bedroom was the only one with a bathtub.
Our hotel template worked for my birthday! They even gave me Diet Cokes.
Despite being a Hyatt, it feels more like an independent, boutique property. The social spaces are aimed at locals and guests alike, so it’s not sterile. As previously mentioned, the vibe is dark and moody, so be prepared for darker hallways and rooms. However, by opening up the curtains, I got some good natural light.
The rooftop pool/bar has 360° views of the city—perfect for a sunset beverage. During our stay, they were repairing the pool.
I saw the Hyatt Regency Hesperia Madrid as we drove into the city from the airport, and the Hyatt Centric Gran Vía Madrid is only a couple of blocks away, so those could also be two good options if you’re staying in Madrid. But give me the Thompson Madrid! I love the vibe, look, and even the smell of the Thompson brand. If you like hotels that feel like they’re part of the city rather than just a place to crash, the Thompson Madrid hits that sweet spot.
