One of the great deals in points and miles is using Virgin Atlantic to save on Delta flights. It always boggles my mind that you can book on one site and fly another airline for even fewer miles than booking on the airline’s site.
These same “magic tricks” can be used to redeem Virgin Atlantic miles for Delta flights. This is nice because the only bank that transfers to Delta is AMEX, but ALL four major banks transfer to Virgin Atlantic. Let’s check out a few options.
Let’s take two Delta hubs, Salt Lake City and Atlanta. When I look on Delta for a flight on March 4th, it costs 38,000 miles. The same flight booked on Virgin Atlantic is only 18,500 miles. Crazy, huh?
These are the Virgin Atlantic flights:
Okay, let’s check out a flight from Atlanta to Paris on a Delta flight in economy. It is a direct flight, and you’d expect the cost in miles to be fairly comparable, right? Look at these shocking results!
Does that just not blow your mind? 🤯 It does mine!
To make things better, the transferable currencies often have transfer bonuses to Virgin Atlantic! If you can book when those occur, you can really score some cheap flights!
If you love Delta or are going somewhere that Delta flies, it is worthwhile to check out Virgin Atlantic. Using Virgin Atlantic to save on Delta flights might work for you!

I have points on AA rewards, can I transfer those to Virgin Atlantic for a Delta flight? (I don’t have an amex card to transfer points on) And if so how would I do that?
Nope, AA miles can not be transferred to another airline. They are cobranded cards and can only be used on that brand. AMEX is a transferable currency so that is why you get so many more choices to transfer to.
Is it possible to upgrade from economy on the Delta flight purchased through Virgin?
If your flight has availability you could with Delta miles or cash. I prefer to book a business flight at the start because you really have no idea if there will be available upgrades.
Is there a visual somewhere on how to navigate Virgin’s website? I live in a Delta hub and I know Delta has the flights I’m looking for but on Virgin’s website I can’t get anywhere. There’s no option to search for flexible dates (that I can find) and I keep coming up empty with any sort of option.
When you search, you can check the flexible dates box under the search options.
