Success Story – Family Trip to Washington, D.C.

Pam

Here is Sierra’s Reader Success Story – Family trip to Washington, D.C. We love that so many people have been inspired to go to the nation’s capital after a trip Alex and I took there.

After listening to the Podcast Episode about Washington, D.C., I decided it was the perfect place to take my family. I had always wanted to go to DC, and after hearing Alex describe how much her son enjoyed it, I knew my elementary-aged boys would love it, too.

Flights and Lodging on Points/Miles

We flew into Dulles Airport from Salt Lake on an evening flight on Delta Airlines (50,000 Delta SkyMiles for four tickets). We flew home from DCA -SLC for the same amount of Delta Miles. It was a total of 100K SkyMiles for roundtrip tickets for our entire family.

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Dulles for one night since it was right near the airport and had a complimentary airport shuttle. This hotel was nice; it had an indoor pool that we spent a few hours in before checking out and heading to downtown DC. It is a Category 1 hotel, and we used 5,000 points to stay there.

We spent the next four nights at the Hyatt Place Washington DC/ White House. It had a large room with two queens and a sofa bed, free daily breakfast, and was within walking distance to many of the major attractions. This is a Category 3 hotel, and we stayed two nights for 12K points each and two nights for 15K points each.

Credit Cards Used for Our Trip

I used only two credit cards for this trip—it’s amazing what you can do with credit card points/miles. I transferred Chase Ultimate Rewards® to Hyatt for lodging, and American Express Membership Rewards® were transferred to Delta for our flights.

Activities in Washington, DC

On our trip, we were able to do a White House tour and a Capital tour. We got to ride the elevator up to the top of the Washington Monument and admire the views. We spent half a day at the Spy Museum and still felt like we didn’t see everything they had there.

One of our favorite activities was renting bikes and riding along a path that followed the Potomac to Alexandria, Virginia.  We flew home from Regan airport and enjoyed the convenience of the closer commute to the airport.

The total trip cost 159,000 points and less than $50 in airline fees for a family of four. Even after using points from just two cards, I still had points left over.

Bottom Line

Thanks, Sierra. We are so happy that Alex’s trip inspired yours. Your reader success story, Family Trip to Washington, D.C., shows that a family can travel nearly free with just a couple of signup bonuses.
