It is absolutely no secret that we love our Hyatt Hotels because of their outsized value. We are also huge fans of their luxury brand, Park Hyatt. But each of us all really enjoys another brand of Hyatt hotels: the Hyatt Thompson Hotel brand, which is part of the Hyatt Boundless Collection. It’s a TMS favorite! Thompson Hotels are usually priced lower than Park Hyatts but still have a luxury, boutique feel. We’re always happy to find one in a city we are going to.
Thompsons mix contemporary and classic design and always have some exciting concepts behind the choices. My recent stay at the Hyatt Thompson Denver included a record turntable and vinyl records in my bedroom, including a record by Billie Holiday.
There are currently 21 Thompson Hotels worldwide that are open or opening soon, and more in the Hyatt pipeline. I’ve been to four of them, and we have the one in Madrid booked for a trip we’re taking in the spring. Honestly, if I can’t stay at a Park Hyatt, a Thompson is my number-two choice from Hyatt. The vibe resonates with me; it is modern, slightly eclectic, and just cool. So cool. My only con is that they tend to be in moody, dark colors and so it would be nice to have more lights in the rooms. Nevertheless, they often have floor-to-ceiling windows that let in a lot of natural light.
Here are some great Thompson locations we’ve really enjoyed:
This popular hotel, located a short walk from Central Park, is one of our favorites. I have been there twice, and it costs about 29K Hyatt points per night—much cheaper than the Park Hyatt across the street. The Thompson Central Park New York is also a favorite of our readers.
Located in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, is also a place we frequent often. Watching whales breach from the hotel is a favorite activity. Both times I’ve been there, it seemed to be more of a couples’ or girls’ trip location than a family location, but Jess has taken her daughter there and she really enjoyed it. It is a Category 7 hotel, so a standard award night runs 30K Hyatt points.
The Thompson Denver may be my new favorite staycation hotel or place to stay the night before I leave from Denver’s airport! I love it! It’s dark and moody, yes, but totally cool! I paid 23K points per night to stay there and was upgraded to an executive suite!
Similar to the Thompson Denver, the Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk also had those darker, luxurious colors. While we weren’t overly impressed with the service at this hotel, the decor was beautiful. A Category 5 hotel, it can be booked for 20K points per night at standard award pricing.
If luxury is your thing but you don’t want to spend as many points as you’d need for a Park Hyatt, consider Hyatt’s Thompson brand. If you like a modern, funky vibe, it may also be your new favorite redemption.
