In October I traveled to Cabo San Lucas with my 9-year-old daughter and oldest stepdaughter. I had been wanting to check out The Cape for quite some time, and my daughter’s fall break seemed like the perfect excuse to take a trip down to Mexico. So what did we think? Keep reading…
The Cape is a Hyatt property, so we were able to redeem Hyatt points for our stay. It’s a category 6, so award nights cost 21,000-29,000 Hyatt points/night, depending on whether you’re staying during off-peak, standard, or peak travel dates. We lucked out and managed to snag four off-peak nights for only 21,000 points/night (84,000 Hyatt points total). Cash rates at the time of booking were over $800/night! It’s easy to rack up Hyatt points through the World of Hyatt Credit Card and cards with transferrable points like the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
All information about the World of Hyatt Credit Card has been collected independently by Travel Mom Squad. The World of Hyatt Credit Card is no longer available through Travel Mom Squad.
One thing I love about Hyatt is that they don’t charge taxes or resort fees on award stays, so our total for four nights was $0!
We flew from Houston to Cabo on Southwest Airlines after finding an amazing deal on points! For 3 flights, we paid only 34,863 Southwest points in total. Taxes to fly to Mexico are definitely more pricey than traveling domestically, so we were out $343.32 total for all three of us.
Still, $343 for three round-trip flights and four nights at a luxury hotel in Mexico isn’t too shabby!
Getting from the airport in Cabo to The Cape was a piece of cake thanks to pre-booking a shuttle. We booked a private transfer through Shuttle at Cabo by Happy Transfers. We paid $140 for a round-trip, private transfer and were very happy with the level of service we received. The shuttle driver was waiting outside the airport for us when we arrived, and they were right on time to pick us up at The Cape to take us back to the airport.
Because I have Globalist benefits with Hyatt, we received quite a few perks during our stay. These included:
Normally you have to stay 60 nights with Hyatt to earn Globalist status, but I’ve written about how I achieved it without staying 60 nights. Be sure to check it out!
The Thompson Suite at The Cape is one of the best hotel rooms I’ve ever stayed in. We had a huge balcony that overlooked the crashing waves and El Arco. I enjoyed having my coffee out there each morning.
The suite itself was huge and had plenty of room for the three of us. It had one and a half bathrooms which are always nice when traveling with kids. Normally sleeper sofas are pretty small and uncomfortable…not so at The Cape. Housekeeping transformed the large sectional sofa into a king-size sleeper sofa each night. It was amazing!
The nice thing about The Cape is that all rooms have ocean views, so I am sure even the standard two-queen room that we originally booked would have been more than adequate.
The Cape is not an all-inclusive hotel. That’s one thing I appreciated about it (I much prefer a small boutique feel to a large, sprawling, all-inclusive resort), but this will be a matter of personal preference.
Our breakfast was included each morning, and we loved everything we tried. The acai bowls were delicious, like the fresh fruit and pastries, avocado toast, and lobster benedict.
The food by the pool was probably the best pool food I’ve ever had. Sushi, shrimp nachos, pasta…it was all delicious. My 9-year-old loved the swim-up bar and virgin strawberry daiquiris.
One night we had dinner at the rooftop restaurant, and all shared a banana split for dessert. I think the entire thing was gone in under three minutes!
Overall we were impressed with the food offerings.
We loved our stay, and I’m trying to convince Alex and Pam to return with me! The pools were great (no waking up at 7 am to reserve a chair), the food was amazing, and the views of the waves and El Arco couldn’t be beaten. Can you use a club lounge access award to get free breakfast at The Cape?
I believe you can ask them to apply it but do it right after you book. If they are sold out, they won’t.
