Changes to the United Credit Cards

Pam

Sadly, there have been some changes to the United credit cards. And changes are seldom good news. 😩 Here are some of the top changes to note:

This card has always been great to downgrade to and still get the United Airlines saver award options when you search for award space. Sadly, you have to spend $10,000 on the card to get that perk now. In my opinion, it makes more sense to keep card_name long-term if you like to redeem miles with United, even with the annual fee.

This card won’t get me this saver awards anymore unless I spend $10,000 on it each year.

This card comes with two United Club lounge passes, which you used to be able to give away to someone else if you didn’t use them. We’ve loved being able to do that. Well, no more. Now the pass must be used by the cardholder or an authorized user. The annual fee has also increased to $150.

This card has undergone some major changes. First, the annual fee has jumped to $350. To offset that, it now comes with a $200 TravelBank credit. It also has an annual 10,000-mile award flight discount per card member year.

It also gives cardholders up to $150 in statement credits per card member year for bookings with United Renowned Hotels and Resorts Program. This is how that works:

  • Book eligible hotel stays through the Renowned Hotels & Resorts program on United’s website.

  • Pay with your card_name to qualify for the credit.

  • The credit will automatically be applied to your statement, up to $150 per year.

Those two United Club lounge passes that come with this card? Again, only the pass holder or an authorized user can use them. The annual fee has also increased to $150.

This card’s annual fee was increased to a whopping $695 and some annoying small credits were added to offset (?) that fee.

Other Changes

United has added many new perks to most of their cards, such as small “coupon-book” deals.  (When we say that, we mean small credits here and there that can get you a discount on certain things, but you have to actively think about in order to redeem and get the value from.) Most of these are not very enticing and, honestly, are a pain to use. These include small ride-share credits on most of their cards, Instacart credits, and private-jet credits (really?), etc. I am really good at using my credits from most of my cards, but I just don’t have the headspace or time to add some more of these to use each year. I doubt I will use them at all.

Bottom Line

There are new changes to the United credit cards. Personally, none of them impress me. What are your thoughts?
